Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections – Minnesota Workers’ Compensation

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections – Minnesota Workers’ Compensation

February 22, 2019 Posted by Jerry Sisk

Does Minnesota Workers’ Compensation Cover Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections?

Physicians are using Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment for a variety of orthopedic conditions. Consequently, many workers’ compensation patients are turning to PRP injections to help alleviate their work injury symptoms. But are PRP injections allowed? If so, for what conditions?

PRP Injections

According to Verywell.com PRP is a concentration of platelet cells taken from your blood, and these platelets have growth factors that may help in the healing process of chronic injuries. Growth factors are chemicals that signal the body to initiate a healing response. By injecting PRP into areas of an injury, the hope is to stimulate and optimize your body’s ability to heal the chronic conditions. PRP contains a high concentration of platelets, other blood cells important in healing, and growth factors.

What Conditions Are Typically Treated?

PRP Injections can be used for a variety of work-related injuries and conditions. Some of these include:

  • Chronic Tendon Injuries
  • Knee Arthritis
  • Knee Injuries
  • Fractures
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
  • Tennis Elbow, and
  • Patellar Tendonitis

How to Get Workers Compensation to Approve Treatment?

Often times for admitted work injuries workers’ compensation will approve the treatment if there is an order from a licensed physician. However, there are times when workers’ compensation may deny the treatment as experimental, unreasonable or unnecessary. In those situations, it is important to discuss your case with a Minnesota workers’ compensation attorney who is familiar with PRP injections. Otherwise, you run the risk of not getting the treatment that is recommended and needed.

If you are injured as a result of your occupation, you are entitled to fair representation. It is important to know your rights under workers’ compensation law.  Most Minnesota workers’ compensation attorneys would be happy to discuss with you your options, including potential scenarios in the future and what to look forward to as you move along in the healing process.  It is important to stay empowered and know your rights under the law.  Minnesota workers’ compensation lawyer, Jerry Sisk, offers free no-hassle consultations to allow you an opportunity to be informed so you can make the right choices.
